Google Ads in Slovenia: What Foreign Companies Should Know Before Launching

Foreign companies often launch in Slovenia the same way: they take a campaign that works in Austria, Germany or Croatia, translate the ads, set a budget and wait. A month later the account shows clicks, but hardly any inquiries.
The problem is rarely Google Ads itself. Slovenia is a small market with its own language, its own search habits and a few details that decide whether a click turns into a lead. Here is what I check first when a foreign company asks me to run Google Ads for the Slovenian market.
A small market changes how you plan campaigns
Slovenia has around 2.1 million people. Google is by far the dominant search engine here (StatCounter), so paid search reaches almost everyone – but search volumes are small. Many specific keywords show “no data” or very low volume in Keyword Planner, even when real people search for them every week.
In practice this means:
- do not drop keywords just because Keyword Planner shows low volume – test them;
- use fewer, broader ad groups instead of dozens of tiny ones that never collect enough data;
- expect smart bidding to need more time to learn, because conversions come in slower than in large markets;
- plan budgets per inquiry, not per click – the numbers are smaller, but so is the competition.
Slovenian is not a language you can machine-translate
Slovenian has six grammatical cases and even a dual form. One word can appear in many variants: cena, cene, ceni, ceno all mean “price”. People also search without diacritics – ciscenje instead of čiščenje. A keyword list translated one-to-one from English or German misses a large part of real searches.
Ad copy has the same problem. Slovenians notice a translated ad immediately, and a clumsy headline lowers trust before anyone clicks. Ads and landing pages should be written by a native speaker who understands marketing, not only grammar.
English works in some B2B and tech niches, where buyers search in English anyway. For local services, consumer products and anything people buy from a Slovenian point of view, search and ads should be in Slovenian.
The landing page decides the result
Most failed launches I see have a decent campaign and a weak landing page. For Slovenian visitors, check at least this:
- Slovenian-language page – not an English page with a translated banner;
- prices in euros with VAT included for consumers (the standard VAT rate in Slovenia is 22%);
- local contact – a Slovenian phone number or at least a clear way to reach someone who speaks Slovenian;
- delivery and returns explained for Slovenia specifically, not “EU shipping” in general;
- trust signals – reviews from Slovenian customers, references, a .si domain or Slovenian subfolder.
Local signals outside Google Ads
If you have a physical presence in Slovenia, a complete Google Business Profile with Slovenian reviews often brings as many calls as the ads. It also improves results in local searches and Maps, where many service searches end.
It is also worth checking where your Slovenian competitors appear: on Google, on local comparison sites, in niche directories. Slovenia is small enough that a few well-chosen placements make a visible difference.
Measurement and consent in the EU
Slovenia follows EU privacy rules, so tracking depends on user consent. Google requires Consent Mode v2 for advertisers who want to use remarketing and full conversion measurement for users in the EEA. Without a proper cookie banner and consent setup, you will see fewer conversions than you actually get, and smart bidding will optimise on incomplete data.
Before launch, make sure that conversion tracking works, that consent is set up correctly and that form submissions and phone calls are both measured.
A short checklist before you launch
- keywords researched in Slovenian, including grammatical variants and spellings without diacritics;
- ads written by a native speaker, not machine-translated;
- Slovenian landing page with local prices, contact and delivery information;
- Google Business Profile set up if you serve customers locally;
- conversion tracking and Consent Mode v2 working;
- realistic expectations: a smaller market, but also less competition and lower costs than in larger EU countries in many niches.
Google Ads works best together with a solid organic base. Read more in SEO in Slovenia and the broader guide to entering the Slovenian market online.

In many niches, yes, because there is less competition. But search volumes are also much smaller, so it is better to plan the budget per inquiry than per click.
Yes, if you want inquiries from Slovenian customers. A page in Slovenian, with prices in euros including VAT and local contact details, usually converts much better than an English or translated page.
